Samizdat. The Music That wasn't There presents artifacts related to Leningrad’s “unofficial” world of music from the Sergey Chubraev Collection and some other collections. Exhibits cover the period from the 1950s to the 1980s with specimens of “bone records” – albums produced on discarded medical X-ray films (roentgenizdat) – and tape albums (magnetizdat). Works of art by Leningrad artists complete the exhibition, among them Bob Koshelokhov, Timur Novikov, E-E Kozlov, and Evgeniy Mikhnov-Voitenko. Numerous historical objects, such as a telephone booth and a letter box, allow to travel one back in time. (E-E) Evgenij Kozlov. KINO. Nachalnik Kamchatki (1984) A key object of Chubraev’s collection and also the logotype of the exhibition is E-E Kozlov’s LP cover for Nachalnik Kamchatki (Начальник Камчатки, The Chief of Kamchatka) from 1984, the third album by Russia’s legendary band KINO (КИНО). For the first time, visitors have a chance to see Kozlov’s original work. His painted photo collage of the band’s members stands out not only as a beautifully designed object. It is unique because the artist created it as a vinyl record sleeve – at a time, when underground bands could distribute their music only as small-format tape albums. Accordingly, KINO’s 1984 magnetizdat album was released with a black and white photographic reproduction of Kozlov’s cover, while his original design was used for a vinyl release of Nachalnik Kamchatki only in 2021 more >>. The original work is displayed together with a selection of LP and CD-covers it inspired, including some plagiarisms, which were produced in the 1990s and later more >>. During the perdiod of the exhibition, KGallery organises a series of events with lectures, book presentations, and guided tours. |
