CD cover of KINO "Natchalnik Kamtchatki", offset print on paper, 12.5 x 14.3 cm, 1998

The LP "Natchalnik Kamtchatki" by KINO was reedited as a CD by Moroz Records in 1998. The front Cover of the CD shows Viktor Tsoy, the singer of the band, holding the LP cover made for the original release in 1984. This cover was created by E-E as a photo collage in a very graphic style. However, in 1984 the album was published with a different cover, not by E-E, but copying his design.

When asked by the members of KINO to design the cover for the LP "Natchalnik Kamtchatki", E-E organised a special photo-shooting session suggesting different poses and movements. Among more than one hundred photographs, he selected this one as the central element of the cover. From left to right: Yury Kasparyan, Aleksandr Titov, Viktor Tsoi, Georgy Gurianov

"KINO", collage on paper, 80 x 225 cm, 1985, detail

One of the largest collages of Evgenij Kozlov, this work uses some graphic elements of the artist's LP cover for KINO's "Natchalnik Kamtchatki" as well as the portraits from the photo session. The black vertical strips, like the black keys of the piano on the left, give the composition a highly musical rhythm. Reference to the world of cinematography is made with the image of a movie projector to the right.

Cover design by Collin Fallows using Evgenj Kozlov's photograph for the LP of Pop Mekhanika / Popular Mechanics "Insect Culture", offset print, 31.3 x 31 cm, 1987

In 1985, Evgenj Kozlov was asked by the musician and leader the group "Popular Mechanics" Sergey Kuriokhin to take pictures for the first international LP of "Pop Mechanics" with the New Composers, realeased in Liverpool, 1987. From several pictures, Kuriokhin chose the one showing Valery Alakhov, himself and Igor Verichev in the 'Passage˚ shopping mall in Leningrad.

untitled, black and white negatives 6 x 6 cm, scratched, 18.7 x 6.2 cm, 1985

Sergey Kuriokhin appreciated E-E's art and collected many of E-E's painted photos. For Kuriokhin's LP Cover of Pop Mekhanika "Insect Culture" E-E photographed Alakhov, Veritchev and Kuryokhin in specific urban places of Leningrad to manifest the spirit of the city. In the medium format film his technique of creating additional features with scratching becomes particularly clear.

The diaries reflect the central point in E-E's life: art and the creation of artistic works. He considers general ideas and philosophical approaches, notes and discusses concepts for compositions, judges his own works and chooses among them for exhibitions. Descriptions of his inward life as well as of his outward life – tragic and pleasant experiences with his family, friends and others – reveal an underlying disquietude about his own existence.

Exhibition of works by Leningrad artists 5= 20 April = 1983 (exhibition poster)
Gouache and instant lettering, 53.3 x 36.5 cm, 1983

E-E created this personalised exhibition poster for the second presentation of independent Leningrad artists in the Palace of the Youth, April 5 - 20, 1983. The figures were first designed for "SIT VENIA VERBO. Traditions of the XX Century" (collection of the State Russian Museum, St. Petersburg), and the rectangular hole refers to Timur Novikov's and Ivan Sotnikov's "NOL OBYEKT" from 1982. 35 artists signed on the back of the poster.

untitled ("ART iz CCCP"), oil on textile, 59 x 45 cm, 1987

In 1987, E-E begins to redesign some of the major Soviet symbols - emblems, figures, script - in the E-E style, rejuvenating them outwardly and inwardly. First developed on small papers, the new CCCP corporate identity signs spread out to clothes, handbags and canvasses up to 6 m in lentgh. The "Smiling Sickle" on the t-shirt with its starry eyes radiating charm and chic is a perfect example of what Evgenij Kozlov, in an innovative form of branding, called "ART from the USSR".
