The New from Leningrad • Aug 27 - Sept 25, 1988


De Nya från Leningrad / "The New from Leningrad" was the first comprehensive exhibition
of the “New Artists“, Leningrad's most important avant-garde art movement of the 1980s.

The exhibition was organized by the Stockholm cultural administration and shown at the
Kulturhuset, Stockholm, Sweden, from August 27 to September 25, 1988
It was produced by Sissi Nilsson, director of the Kulturhuset. Co-curator: Fredrik Vogel
Participating and counseling institutions: Soviet Ministry of Culture, Swedish Institute,
Soviet Embassy (Stockholm), Leningrad Komsomol, Swedish General Consulate (Leningrad).

A number of works displayed at the Kulturhuset were shown earlier the same year in London
(7 Independent Artists Live from Leningrad more>>), Rotterdam ("Da DA Majakowski" more>>)
and Leningrad ("Новые художники / Novye Khudozhniki, The New Artists" more>>)

After the Kulturhuset exhibition, Fredrik Vogel took part of the works to Aarhus, and then Copenhagen
and Liverpool, where the exhibition tour ended in February 1989. more>>

Andrey Kurmayartsev “Mertvyi” and Oleg Zaika were not mentioned in the officlal list of artists, although their works were also exhibited.
Andrey Kurmayartsev “Mertvyi‘s” portrait was erroneously attributed to Evgeny Yufit. See bottom of the page.
