On September 23, another Pop-Mekhanika (Pop-Mekhanika no. 418) took place.  Sergei Kuryokhin opened the press conference dedicated to this event in the following way:

“This concert starts a new line in Pop-Mekhanika's and my own creative work.… Roughly speaking, this line is about religious propaganda. Religious propaganda for me is the propaganda of Religion with a capital R. It means researching the realm that lies between life and death, because this is basically the only topic religion can speak of: it is its fundamental and, perhaps, its only realm. We have come to a moment where the crisis of art is evident (and not only of art but also of religion, ethics, and morality). It marks the end of a long epoch in people’s life. One thing is to become aware of it, and quite another is to declare it. And everything I am going to do in the near future and, hopefully, in the longer term, will be related to my speaking out how I see this and what are the possible ways out of the current situation. I want to stress once more that I am not advertising religious ideas but all types of religion that exist in nature (without specifying any nuances), as well as a certain worldview formed on their basis and a search for ways to set in motion the further development of art.… I am deeply convinced that art is no longer in a condition to cope on its own with the ideas it has been proclaiming over so many years. This has to do with the crisis of Christianity, Islam, and all other existing religions.”

And so on and so forth. The great combinator felt inspired and got carried away. He spoke about the recent concert in Helsinki that took place on September 1, about the “tough prophet”  Aleister Crowley (died in 1947), to whom the show was dedicated, about the death of the old gods and the dawn of new ones, about the antichrist samurai, and about the analog-to-digital conversion. Basically, it all boiled down to the fact that this event should hasten the coming of the New Age, and the surest way to do this is a universal Pop-Mekhanika.

Be it as it may, the performance itself was, as always, tastefully designed and brilliantly executed on the stage of the Lensoviet [Leningrad City Council] Palace of Culture.  For two hours straight, the four-armed Kuryokhin, with two of his arms made of papier-mache, enthusiastically manipulated a whole army of masked stock characters—aging ballerinas, half-naked warriors, cardboard Russian peasants—who frolicked merrily among submersibles, atomic explosions, and other small-scale pyrotechnic effects, accompanied by a well-ordered cacophony of sounds, from techno to R. Strauss and G. Mahler.  Rock’n’roll as such was represented by a more than impressive team: Sergei Kuryokhin (grand piano), Alexander Lyapin (solo guitar), Igor Tikhomirov (bass), and Uncle Misha Chernov (flute and saxophone).  Also present were Africa, Timur Novikov, and others, all of them incognito.

There was also—well, how shall we put it?—not exactly a “fly in the ointment,” but still… There were, so to speak, political overtones.  First, the whole event (judging by the poster) was addressed to Kuryokhin’s current comrade-in-arms, the deputy for the 210th Northwestern constituency, Alexander Dugin. Second, the leader of the National Bolshevik movement Eduard Limonov also took part in the Pop-Mekhanika. As a consequence, the notorious newspaper Limonka and other "red" trash were distributed in the foyer: "Come all ye discontented, radical, bold, and unbroken, and we shall give you a job to do."

What is this “job,” exactly?  And what does it have to do with music? Does it stand for bringing paranoid ideas to life, for flirting with the "bright new world," or for a performance of Moscow comedians on the St. Petersburg election stage???

Only Kuryokhin can tell.

Better not mix incompatibles.  "No one can serve two gods!"  (Mikhail Bulgakov, Heart of a Dog).
