The New Artists • Новые художники

Leningrad, Sverdlov House of Culture, 22-25 April 1988

The Display of Works

The four sides of the exhibition can be approximately described in the following way:

The front side with the stage had three of Kozlov’s “constructivist” White on Red works from 1987: CCCP, Star, and Star. 6 Figures  – as described in the introduction.

The right wall (right when looking towards the stage) had a large number of high windows, which made it unsuitable for hanging paintings. To gain space, the artists closed the windows with the curtains installed along the window front – curtains with intricate patterns, so it seems. Selecting mainly large canvases without stretchers, they fixed their works directly to the curtain rack. In some cases, they attached yet another painting to a canvas so as to make full use of the vertical surface. Below, on the floor, several paintings on stretchers were leaning against the wall. (Maslov, Zaika, Kozlov, Verichev, Bugaev, Savchenkov, Novikov)

At the rear end of the hall, partitions left and right of a wide passage created a separate space where chairs were stored. This passage had been closed with movable walls which were used for displaying paintings. On the right was a large work on textile, wrapped around a metallic construction; Novikov’s flyer was attached to this construction. Four paintings hung from a rope fixed like a washing line between the two walls left and right. (Tsoi, Bugaev, Sotnikov, Kotelnikov).

The wall left to the stage was used for paintings of a medium size, many of them mounted on stretchers. They were fixed to the wall in two rows, top and bottom, and even on top of doors. (Zaika, Novikov, Sotnikov, Gutsevich, Ovchinnikov)

In order to help compare what can be seen in these pictures, I have numbered all works directly in the images, starting at the stage and continuing clockwise: stage, right wall, rear wall, and left wall.

Notes: No. 27 might not correspond to a work, but just show a pattern of the curtain. Works I overlooked were numbered subsequently (Nos. 86, 87 and 88).

The following table mentions several exhibitions from 1988 or 1989 where works from the Sverdlov House of Culture were displayed. The list is not exhaustive since the author has no comprehensive knowledge of these exhibitions.

“Brushstroke” and “New Artists” refer to the following exhibition catalogues:
Brushstroke, The State Russian Museum, 2010
New Artists, Moscow Museum of Modern Art, 2012
The name of the photographer or archive is indicated directly in the pictures.
