Mayakovsky Friends Club report about the first year

За первый год работы клуба удалось значительно поднять интерес к творчеству В.В. Маяковскому и его соратников в среде молодой творческой интеллигенции, что является основной целью клуба.

К сожалению отсутствие помещения для постоянной работы клуба ограничило возможности клуба, и работа проводилась по секциям и в рамках других творческих организаций.

Литературный отдел подготовил сборник произведений членов секции общим объемом 456 машинописных страниц 14 авторов

Ведется обширная переписка, проводятся регулярные встреч посвящённые различным вопросам литературы.

Музыкальный отдел клуба участвовал в подготовке большего [sic] количества концертов с участием членов клуба, оркестра «Популярная механика», группы «Кино», участвовали в проведении ленинградского рок фестиваля «Литуаника-87», дней искусств в Риге, съемках художественных, документальных, музыкальных фильмах и телепередач, записи музыки к фильмам и спектаклям. Записано большое количество музыкальных фонограмм.

Отдел изобразительного искусства состоящий в основном из группы «Новые художники» работал над оформлением горoдских праздников, концертов и фестивалей, художники клуба участвовали в оформлении Рок фестиваля, Московского международного кинофестиваля, выставках ТЭИИ, днях искусств в Риге, форуме творческой молодежи Ленинграда, выставке в рамках советско-американского похода за мир в Москве, фестивале «Фолклер-87» газеты «Советская культура», организовали выставки в кинотеатрах «Аврора», «Знамя», «Коллизей» [sic], участвовали в культурной программе 17 молодежной выставки в Москве.

Отдел критики проводил исследования наследия В.В. Маяковского, членами секции написанно [sic] несколько статей о творчестве Маяковского и его круга, современных последователях. Ведется большая внутрисекционная рaбота. Готовится семинар по новой критике.

Театральный отдел проводил подготовку сценического действия оркестра «Популярная механика», театрализованных представлений для народных гуляний/Петропавлоская крепость, парк имени Ленина./

Подготовленна и показана и литературно-музыкальная композиция «Вон самогон» на стихи Маяковского/ С. Курехин, С. Бугаев/

Получена благодарность от Лаурета государственной премии и премии ленинского комсомола С.А. Соловьева за помощь в съемках фильма «АССА»/киностудия «Мосфильм»/

Отдел хранения пополнился большим колличеством материалов о В.В. Маяковском и отечественном революционном искусстве, ведется обширная переписка, получены материалы из других стран. Подготовленна [sic] к произведению в октябре 1987 года в кинотеатре «Знамя» выставка из фондов клуба посвященная В.В. Маяковскому/. К 70 летию октября/

Клубом проводится большая работа по связам с другими творческими объединениями. ТЭИИ, «Митки», Рок клуб, клуб 81, клуб молодых искусствоведов — Ленинград; объединение «Эрмитаж», клуб авангардистов, творческое объедение «Круг»—Москва; «Лайбах» —Любляна, «Красный клин» Лондон открылись филиалы клуба в Москве и Стокгольме.

Финансовой деятельности клуб не вел, все необходимые затраты производились из личных средств членов клуба.

Общее количество членов к сентябрю 1987 года — 75 человек

Novikov’s report tells the reader that in the course of its first year of existence, the Club created its sections – a total of seven: literature, music, visual arts, scholarly criticism, cinema (including photography), theatre, and archive. In this way, Novikov imitated the official structure of an Academy of Arts: unlike the New Artists‘ rather amorphous compound, which was based on the principle of everyone doing everything (or nothing), the Club of Friends of V.V. Mayakovsky allowed allotting titles to individual members – as chairman (Sergei Bugaev), vice-chairman (Timur Novikov) and head of a section.

As four of these seven sections were headed by either Bugaev or Novikov, they each had three functions. Thus, Sergei Bugaev became Chairman of the Club of Friends of V.V. Mayakovsky, and he also headed the Music as well as the Theatre Sections. Timur Novikov appointed himself to the post of Vice-Chairman and became Head of the Visual Arts Section and the Archival Section. Regarding the remaining three sections, Vladislav Gutsevich was head of the literature section, S. Dobrotvorsky head of the cinema section (with Sergey Borisov heading the sub-section of photography), while the head of the scholarly criticism section was a certain A., perhaps Arkady Dragomoshchenko (see next chapter). The five names just mentioned – Bugaev, Novikov, Gutsevich, Dobrotvorsky, Borisov – are the only ones referred to in Novikov’s report.

In his report, Novikov also wrote that the Visual Arts Section was composed mainly of New Artists (Отдел изобразительного искусства состоящий в основном из группы “Новые художники” …). This is a new formula with regard to Novikov’s 1986 article, where, as we have seen, the New Artists were said to have “formed the Club of Friends of V. V. Mayakovsky with the purpose of strengthening and developing a patriotic, innovative tradition. Almost all the artists joined along with composers, workers in the new theatre and cinema, several rock musicians, art experts and collectors (see introduction footnote 2).

A year later, Novikov claims the number of members to have reached seventy-five (Общее количество членов к сентябрю 1987 года — 75 человек).The New Artists, it appears, had shrunk to a mere section of the Club. But was this really the case?

If we look Club’s activities listed in Novikov’s report, it comes as no surprise that all activities of the visual arts section are typical New Artists activities, since “in the main”, New Artists compose this section. Among such activities are exhibitions at cinemas foyers, exhibition design of backdrops for concerts, participation in Pop-Mekhanika concerts, art festivals in Riga and Moscow etc. I‘m returning to them in the next chapter.

The literary section prepared an edition of works by fourteen members of the section with a total of 456 typewritten pages.

The musical section lists participation in Pop-Mekhanika concerts, too, but also in concerts of the Kino band, the Riga festival, and music recordings. The theatre section again mentions Pop-Mekhanika concerts (conducting the preparation of the stage action), as well as film director Sergey Solovyev’s acknowledgements for the Club’s support of the ASSA movie (ASSA featured Sergei Bugaev in the main role and the Kino band with the song “I want changes”, which was to become the unofficial perestroika hymn). As we would expect, the scholarly criticism section dedicated some research and a number of articles to V.V. Mayakovsky. The archival section organised a show with exhibits from its collection.

These quotes do not exhaust the entries in the report, and the number of the Club's activities is indeed rather impressive.[1] The situation changes when excluding those projects that can not be verifed as factual, which concern, in the main, the literary and scholarly criticism sections. In this case, with the exception of the performance “Out, Moonshine” (see previous chapter), nothing else mentioned in the report conforms to the working plan set up in 1986 (Document F). Put differently, nothing else constitutes a genuinely autonomous activity that wouldn‘t have happened had it not been for the Mayakovsky Friends Club. This may be explained by the simple fact that the Club had not attained its main goal – to receive its own premises.

In the next chapter I will show that in Ksenia Novikova’s chronicle – that is, retrospectively – the New Artists were given credit for practically Mayakovsky Friends Club activities listed by Timur Novikov .

[1] Andrey Khobystin told me of his improvised Mayakovsky exhibition at the Scientific Library of the State Hermitage (Научная библиотека Гос. Эрмитажа) in 1987, but since Novikov does not mention it in his report, I will not include it in the Club’s activities, either.
