0.00 - 4 min 37 s Sergey Kuryokhin: [Hans Kumpf] is also a co-editor and correspondent of some of the major jazz magazines in Europe and beyond. He is the author of two books on contemporary music – not just jazz, but also classical avant-garde. Thus, his books include his interviews with Stockhausen, Kagel, and various well-known musicians from Western Germany and other European countries. For his own part, Hans Kumpf plays only the clarinet, as he loves this instrument and prefers it to all others. Unlike some other clarinetists who also play the saxophone, Hans prefers only the clarinet. So today, Hans Kumpf’s arrival has brought here a few people who would love to listen to such music, and musicians from several different cities, who have come to jam together with Hans. Now I’m going to introduce the musicians who will participate in today’s session. Next, I will say a few words about the music, and then we’ll jam. So, we have here Igor Butman from Moscow. He is the first alto player of Oleg Lundstrem’s big band and a former saxophonist of David Goloshchekin’s band. The guitar and small instruments are played by Boris Grebenshikov, the leader of Aquarium and Radio Africa[3] and our well-known rock musician. So, this thing… I’m not sure how it’s called. Ivan Sotnikov (?): Yeah, this thing. It’s the Utiugon. Sergey Kuryokhin: Yeah, the Utiugon. Probably designed by Timur Novikov, right? Timur Novikov: Together with Ivan Sotnikov. Sergey Kuryokhin: Yes, together with Ivan Sotnikov. So, the two of them will play the Utiugon. It is an electronic keyboard enhanced with elements of mechanical… Mechanical what? Voice: Sound. Voice 2: Piano. Piano. Sergey Kuryokhin: Of mechanical sound production. Vladimir Boluchevsky, a sax player. Vladimir Volkov. Voice: A double bass player. Sergey Kuryokhin: Right. Sorry. Volkov is well-known for… For what? [General laughter] He is working with Vyacheslav Gayvoronsky, who is also present here and who will play the flugelhorn, if I’m not mistaken.[4] The next is Sergey Letov from Moscow. He will play the alto and bass clarinets, I think. Yeah. Voice: Yeah, this seems to be the case. Sergey Kuryokhin: Alexander Kondrashkin, the drummer of the Strannye Igry band. He will play percussion, that is, cymbals. And everybody who wants to take part may produce some sounds that blend well with the overall composition. All this will be recorded and will remain as a remarkable record of the Soviet… Voice 1: Avant-garde. Voice 2: Of the Soviet jazz. Sergey Kuryokhin: So, the first piece will be quite long, but it will… Wait a moment, Sergey, I want to say a few words about the music. The first piece will be quite long, but it will be divided into parts. It will begin with a general collective improvisation, a very quiet one. A tutti part of sorts. After that… Voice: Understand. Sergey Kuryokhin: After that, Hans Kumpf will remain alone and perform solo. Next, he will be joined by Vladimir Volkov. Vladimir, do you hear me? Voice: Yes, yes, yes. Sergey Kuryokhin: It will be a Volkov–Kumpf duet. Next, the duet will be joined by Vyacheslav Gayvoronsky and become a trio. Next, there will be another tutti part, after which events will, so to speak… Voice: Develop unpredictably. Take their course. Sergey Kuryokhin: Develop unpredictably, as a spontaneous improvisation. It will be better if we don't play simultaneously all the time. It will be better if there are duets, trios, and solo parts. Let’s say only one performer remains. Don’t begin to play with him all at once. Otherwise, some instruments simply cannot be heard. The teapot, for example. It is a very quiet instrument and should be played alone. A duet of teapot and clarinet, for example. Therefore, I suggest listening very carefully. Some parts will be very loud, others, incredibly low. The music may become both aggressive and meditative, depending on our inclinations and a particular piece. I don’t know how the first piece is called, but it will continue for forty minutes, while the tape lasts. The tape lasts for about forty minutes, doesn’t it, Mikhail? Voice: Forty minutes, right. Sergey Kuryokhin: Right. Voice: Let’s note down the time. Sergey Kuryokhin: So, the beginning is a tutti part. Everybody begins quietly. Next, a groove, a clarinet solo. After that, Vladimir Volkov with Kumpf play duo. Now, after that Vyacheslav Gayvoronsky, Kumpf and Volkov play trio. After that tutti, and spontaneous improvisation. Voice 1: Please. Voice 2: OK. All right, all right. |

[3] According to Russian Wikipedia,“Radio Afrika” was Aquarium's fourth album, recorded in spring and July 1983 and released by “Melodia“ in 1988. Sergey Kuryokhin’s and Boris Grebenshikov's idea to call their joint projects “Radio Afrika” let to the title.
